The first few issues are mostly missing scenes/filler/debriefing, it's decent and I enjoyed Poe, Finn, and Rey's byplay. Poe's escape from Jakku is consistent with the TFA novelization, and in TFA Poe also mentions Snap making a reconnaissance flight on Starkiller Base.

I think the mission that Black Squadron goes on is as good of an excuse as any for why they weren't in TLJ (Jess's actress got cast in Netflix's Iron Fist, and Snap's actor is one of JJ Abrams' favorites, don't really know why he wasn't in TLJ, just why he was in both TFA and TROS). I really liked Jess and Suralinda's team-up on Ikkrukk. It's nice that they got a victory there, honestly the canon sequel stuff and the disappointment on Pastoria was kind of crossing a little into grimdark territory for me.

It's only tangentially related to the volume, but when TFA came out there was a big publicity push about Nien Nunb showing up, they managed to find his original voice actor from ROTJ, who was a student from Kenya involved in filming ROTJ but quit acting shortly after. It's part of why he was so prominent in Battlefront: Twilight Company. I can't find the article I read about it offhand, but wikipedia has some info. I just thought it was a neat story.

The art from Annual 2 isn't that great, but I like the story and the way it incorporates Han.

(Edit: just a heads up, some irl stuff has come up and I might not be as active on the Doctor Aphra posts.)
