Comic: Poe Dameron, Vol. 5: The Spark and the Fire

Lor San Tekka has been found! Now Poe Dameron is off to recover the missing link to legendary Jedi master Luke Skywalker's whereabouts. But his plan goes astray when the First Order intervenes on Jakku... Meanwhile, the rest of Black Squadron takes off on their most daring mission yet! Follow everyone's favorite Resistance crew as Poe Dameron tells Rey and Finn all about his unseen adventures during the events of Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens! (goodreads summary)

1. So Poe loved the ship he lost on Jakku and blamed the jacket for his inability to eject timely from the TIE crash. What other tidbits did you learn that filled in details from the movies? Are there any that differ from what you expected?

2. What do you make of Black Squadron's mission and was it a satisfying explanation for why they weren't at the Battle of Crait?

3. What were some of your favorite panels?

4. Anything else?

As usual, there's no need to answer all (or any) of the questions. Please bring up other aspects of the volume as well.

The first few issues are mostly missing scenes/filler/debriefing, it's decent and I enjoyed Poe, Finn, and Rey's byplay. Poe's escape from Jakku is consistent with the TFA novelization, and in TFA Poe also mentions Snap making a reconnaissance flight on Starkiller Base.

I think the mission that Black Squadron goes on is as good of an excuse as any for why they weren't in TLJ (Jess's actress got cast in Netflix's Iron Fist, and Snap's actor is one of JJ Abrams' favorites, don't really know why he wasn't in TLJ, just why he was in both TFA and TROS). I really liked Jess and Suralinda's team-up on Ikkrukk. It's nice that they got a victory there, honestly the canon sequel stuff and the disappointment on Pastoria was kind of crossing a little into grimdark territory for me.

It's only tangentially related to the volume, but when TFA came out there was a big publicity push about Nien Nunb showing up, they managed to find his original voice actor from ROTJ, who was a student from Kenya involved in filming ROTJ but quit acting shortly after. It's part of why he was so prominent in Battlefront: Twilight Company. I can't find the article I read about it offhand, but wikipedia has some info. I just thought it was a neat story.

The art from Annual 2 isn't that great, but I like the story and the way it incorporates Han.

(Edit: just a heads up, some irl stuff has come up and I might not be as active on the Doctor Aphra posts.)
