Also snowflake related, but in the literal sense, we’ve had snow, which meany I didn’t go to the cinema today like I planned cause I was worried about the ice… so I prompted fell on the ice while walking back home from walking the pup. I’m mostly ok but hurt both my hands (my right has this… ache inside, the left has a finger covered in plasters from cuts and a blood blister near the wrist) which is annoying,

THIS IS OUR YEAR.

I mean, I'm going to do my damnedest to take Eddie Munson's words to heart, anyway. ((Separate post to break down season 5 will happen once I've recovered from season 5 ♥))

a rough list of my 2026 goals/hopes/intentions/thesaurus word here:

OVERALL )

SOONER
+ Princess 2026 - I didn't really mention it before, because it felt too much like flashbacks to Girl Scout cookies and Jump Rope for Heart, and I hated having to knock on doors and ask for donations. BUT, it is for a good cause, and if you've read this far (I say as I cheated and left this part outside the cut so it would be seen), least I can do is give it a pimp.

Starlight has been a sponsor of the Disney races for a few years; and also work with Nintendo, to put Switches in hospital rooms, for kids to play while they're in treatment. Starlight also provides custom hospital gowns; arts&crafts supplies; and other programs to help distract kids who are suffering from the worst distractions to their lives.

-- End of Feb 2025, I agreed to join in the RunDisney Princess Weekend 10K on behalf of Starlight. I didn't think the person who I told would remember, so I didn't think anything of it. A few days before registration opened for 2026: THEY REMEMBERED.

-- My running team has a project to make quilt blocks chosen by dice; there are K-Pop Demon Hunters quilt block patterns; a shark and a corgi quilt pattern - and a UFO pattern that will be available very soon - and I've made a blanket for a giveaway. I've also made some plush stars; coasters; trying my hand at some basic keychains.

-- Also, if our entire team raises the amount we need before race weekend (end of Feb 2026), I've vowed to run* the 10K in full Lower Decks Boilmer cosplay. Right down to the purple hair. The hair dye is sitting on my bathroom counter, right now, just in case.

If I have piqued you interest in any way, you can take a look at the campaign page. No participation is necessary. It's just a link. If you really need that corgi butt quilt pattern made, but don't sew, I'll make it for you. Feel free to tell your friends, if you so choose - We're all friends here.

* there will be NO running, okay? Siriusly.

Okay.. enough of the sales pitch.

I wish you all a calmer and productive 2026 and know that even if I'm not posting here, I'm here like Roz.

I love all your faces ♥

Challenge #1

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

So it’s that time of year again, time for [community profile] snowflake_challenge (and also it’s 2026 what the hell?).

I’m never terribly good with intros. I never know what to say and always feel sure I miss something but here goes.

I’m Stuie, I’m from the uk and I have two cats (Leia and Midna) and a dog (Naryu). I’m a student with the open university, doing science and hopefully I’ll finish it sometime (but health has delayed things). I’ve got depression and anxiety and probably autism too, but I’ve not been assessed yet (I have asked my doctor to refer me who knows what happened there). But anyway.

I’m a nerd as a seen below, I love Star Wars, Zelda and Pokémon and Doctor Who. Basically I love any sci fi stuff, but also I like horror stuff too.

I also write many smut fic occasionally other stuff, though I’ve stalled a lot over the past months due to various things.

I post about random general things, thoughts on films/shows and occasionally pic posts. I’ve got a cinema pass so I’ve started to use that to see films more often and post thoughts about them too. I also post about Doctor Who eps as I watch them (I’m currently going through the new season 15 boxset, but I had to stall cause of the holidays)

Current fixations are Stranger Things (we’ll see if that holds when I watch the finale), IT, The Long Walk, Joshua Odjick in general, 5 Seconds Of Summer.

Here’s a bunch of things that I like/am interested in (I’m sure I’ve missed things and may add them in later)

Films: Clown In A Cornfield, Noroi: The Curse, Sonic The Hedgehog, Star Wars, The Long Walk, Wildhood

Games: Dead By Daylight, Fall Guys, Fortnite, Pokémon, The Elder Scrolls Online, The Legend Of Zelda

Music: 5 Seconds Of Summer, Coheed And Cambria, James Marriott, Sleep Token, Waterparks

Shows: Doctor Who, IT: Welcome To Derry, Stranger Things

(I’m gonna come back and add things to the lists later as my mind feels hazy)

What I hope to gain from snowflake? I dunno really, new followers would be nice but I like how snowflake makes things so active in general.

Happy new year

Happy new year!

As promised (or threatened?) at the start of the last post about stranger things here’s a more general post.

The past week has been that weird time of year where everything is kinda strange so it’s been a time of mostly watching stuff. I’ll get to some of that later on though.

Tuesday was an unexpected trip, mums friend from the library (not who she’s with most of the time but she is sometimes) was heading to Home Bargains and asked if we wanted to go. I wasn’t too keen cause of momey and not wanting to go out in general but she mentioned she was feeling unsteady so I told mum it’s best we go just in case. We didn’t get much from there but I got chilli sauce I wanted to pick up and two more of the doorables things (one which had Fennec the other had Leia). On seeing that the guy at the til asked who my fav Star Wars character was and my mind instantly blanked 😭 I said R2 and Leia which is true but I could have said more if I had thought.

Going also meant I could pop in JYSK a store that sells furniture. I saw they had storage boxes for £2.50 and the measurements seemed like one would be good for record storage so I picked on up. When I got home it was the right size, the records fit nicely so that’ll be useful.

I found that my Xmas package from [personal profile] fleshdoll had arrived but it wasn’t here. After checking the other house with the same number, he sent me a pick of where it was and I managed to pick it up. And ahh! It was a plushie of Steve, a Stranger Things bitty pop (which was Dustin!) and a cool Stranger Things book that’s Walmart exclusive (it’s dnd focussed and includes stickers, cards and lil standees). It’s so cool and something I know I’d never see here. I’m gonna love looking through it properly when I have more focus!

Yesterday we went down to Sainsburys, it was mums idea cause of the party food ending last night. Alas as such most of it was gone (I hate that the tacos went so quick I love them so many) but I got some of the dim sum things reduced so it was essentially 3 for the price of 1. And at least I got my Lego magazines (and a lil set from Aldi). It also meant mum could see the new M and S (she didn’t think much of it cause of the layout) and at least I got sushi

We also went into tk and I got some books (myths and legends of Egypt, the dark forces of Tolkien) and some Cinamoroll stuff (a mug and socks, plus some lights) which was cute.

But ugh going meant I was so exhausted last night and it meant I just tuned out a bit. I did try and finish a fall guys event but failed cause damn getting ranked wins is hard (I needed 2 to get the last reward and only managed one, I didn’t realise it ended today until then or I’d have tried harder sooner)

And then the alcohol we have didn’t taste too great, made my head fuzzy and then activated my sadness which is still there now. Ugh.

***

But onto things watched.

Bullet point thoughts on shows
*The Good Ship Murder - was pretty good, I’m glad the series is back on in a few days
*Death In Paradise - was pretty good too. It was funny that so much of it was in the cold drab uk (poor Selwyn!) though that last scene made me happy
*Midsomer Murders - two pretty solid eps, I think the first was the one that worked best
*the Christmas lectures - I managed to see them all (roughly on time) and they were pretty fun. I do enjoy Maggie (and her hair was so pretty) but she did talk a lil fast at times (which might be an adhd thing since she mentioned having it at the end, which was a sweet moment)

Thee was also a thing on called Titanic Sinks Tonight. I’ve seen three of the eps so far and it’s so fascinating. It’s about the sinking (obviously) but from the perspectives and memories of survives (with some experts too) and it is both interesting and horrific. (I dunno what it is about the sinking that interests us so this long after.) So much is just galling. A communication about ice was completely ignored, there was no direct communication between the engine room to let the crew know a flood was happening (it took someone running through the ship to find out!), the captain didn’t inform key crew about the urgency of the situation, a nearby ship didn’t have the radio room manned so missed the sos’, third class passengers weren’t even told anything was happening and, of course, there’s the lifeboats which were famously not fully filled (again cause of poor communication and one guy taking women and children first to mean women and children only).

I’ve also watched a bunch of films, so same deal.
*Puss In Boots the last wish - I loved this, one of the best films I’ve seen over the holidays. (And not just cause of the hot wolf). I loved the lil dog and that it turned into a quest (I love a good quest) and kitty soft paws looks so much like Midna.
*A Wrinkle In Time - Not scene before but wanted to because of Stranger Things. For the most part it was pretty good, especially the Camazotz scenes
*Back To The Future - The trilogy was on tv and I’d not seen for awhile so decided to watch. It was pretty good, part II was my fav (though it’s so funny how advanced they thought we’d be in 2015). It was bold to make the third one a western (though that meant it didn’t quite land as well cause Im not a western fan.)

Also I finally watched Strange Harvest, I’d wanted to see it since seeing the trailer and it came to prime video as a paid download this month. It was half off in the sale so I picked it up and ahh I’m so glad I did. It’s played as true crime documentary with interviews from police, experts and family of victims of a serial killer. It works so well and I’m glad it was as good as I hoped it would be (perhaps better).

(I’m sure I missed a bunch of other stuff I watched, this year is always so busy with things)

Today is gonna be spent watching the traitors prom, then the traitors tonight and maybe watching something else but what depends on mood (if it’s still low I doubt I’ll watch the Stranger Things finale) and there’ll be another post for snowflake. I do wanna fic some (again depends on mood) and set up a quest calendar thing I got.

2025 Year in Review )

I made an account on StoryGraph to help track my TBR in the hopes of whittling it down from 100+ books to something in the 40s or lower. Which I hope will be easy, because there are a lot of children's books on my list that I've found at Goodwill, or ThriftBooks, or otherwise inherited. I also swapped out the rocking chair in my office/library with the big round LoveSac so that I can snuggle and read without distractions.

And on that note, I'm going to dive back in to The Rose Field to see if I can knock that out before midnight.

So this is just gonna be a Stranger Things thoughts post! The second volume of the season went live on Christmas Day night (absurd time to put it out honestly) but I was t able to watch till Saturday night. I had hoped to do multiple eps per night, but alas tiredness won out, so I spread them out over the last three nights.

So! Thoughts ahoy!

(I really need a bunch more Stranger Things icons, expect a few in the new year when I have the focus)

I’m not entirely sure when I’ll watch the last ep. It might be New Years Day Night but that very much depends on my energy which tends to be so off now. So maybe Friday or Saturday instead.

Hopefully I’ll have a more general post tomorrow or Friday too, but ai know snowflake starts tomorrow so there’ll be at least that.

O Pioneers! by Willa Cather. Slice of life in the settlement and farming of Nebraska. This has lovely writing and I really liked it except for the souring I felt at the end. spoilers )

This is probably the last book I'll finish in 2025 so, to count up. Total books read in 2025: 48! Or 49 I suppose if I count a book I read for work. So close to 50. This was a really good reading year for me although it corresponded to a not great writing year. Particular favorites were everything by Charlotte Bronte, John Steinbeck, and Octavia Butler, The Blue Castle, and the Dungeon Crawler Carl series.

Time for me to start my annual Lord of the Rings re-watch. Hope everyone has a good new year's!

watched a few “guess the 00s anime by its opening” videos tonight and now I’m thinking about hellsing.

it was one of my firsts way way back in the day and… probably a little too formative even if I don’t really remember much of it right now. I should probably watch ultimate for reals soon.

We watched Heated Rivalry week by week as it released; Perry was like "I'll sit with you while you watch it," but ended up getting very invested. Especially in the Scott Hunter storyline, what a weirdo (I really liked the Scott episode, which I gather is not a popular opinion, but I'm not here for him and his smoothie twink, and the pacing is a little out of whack). We tend to put things on over and over again with varying degrees of focus, so we've watched all of it a lot. General spoilers for the season.

I had read the books but ages ago and they didn't really stick with me. I'm sure they're fine (I've heard the quality is kind of uneven and goes down with later books; I only ever read the first two and preferred the second one), but the show was phenomenal. Just getting gay hockey softcore on tv in 2025 feels important and hopeful. The fact that it was also really good and even the straight hockey bro podcasts (which...are now videos? But we still call them podcasts? I don't understand) are obsessed with it is just a bonus. Both What Chaos and Empty Netters are getting a lot of attention for their reactions; I haven't watched any of them all the way through but have seen cute clips on tumblr. It's charming to watch them slowly come to realize the vast diversity of experiences in the world. Like seeing kindergartners on a fieldtrip to an interactive museum.

It's also been delightful to watch Connor and Hudson (...mostly Hudson) just go completely off the rails in all the media appearances they've been making since the show took off. Like, just the most unhinged freaks who were completely made for each other and also this show. I adore them. I am pleased to report that the RPF develops apace.

Also Cesare Borgia was there? It's frankly a hate crime to make François Arnaud play an American hockey player, but he does it very well and is very handsome indeed. Samantha was like "he looks like a young Shea Weber." He looks like a Shea Weber who hasn't spent the last 25 years in a meat grinder, is what he looks like, because those men are the same age. I enjoyed his response to the guy (not sure who he is or why his opinion mattered) who was like "this is not what gay sex looks like" by being like "what the fuck does gay sex look like?" and then doubling down when Vulture interviewed him about it like "okay but they don't act gay though" and he was like "why are you watching a show about closeted hockey players if you don't think there's room for that diversity of experience." He and Jacob Tierney have both also been on point in response to any bullshit about whether Connor or Hudson are gay and why won't they come out, etc. They were both waiting tables up until like the week before filming started! Give them some space! Mind your business! Also it's illegal in Canada to ask people that during a job interview (thank u, Jacob).

I enjoy the memes about how this is Canadian government funded hockey yaoi (due to the tax incentives in Ontario and Québec and the Canadian Media fund) as long as they don't go so hard they tip over into "tee hee! what a quaint and charming country with none of the problems experienced by real countries!" which tumblr loves to do. Mostly it's been okay; they got it out of their systems after the pilot I guess.

The show itself, IDK, you should go watch it. It's lit so you can see what happens! There's lots of kissing and face touching and tit grabbing and suggestive angles and artfully raised thighs doing a lot of penis-hiding work. The intimacy is scorching, and in all the interviews they talk about how much that's down to the intimacy coordinator and everything being tightly choreographed, which I think is super cool. There's loadbearing buttsex and some light BDSM. The acting is good, don't listen to what people say about Hudson's acting, he watched Sidney Crosby do media and he made his choices on purpose. The haters simply don't understand the depth of his art.

Like the source material, sometimes it tips over into cringe a little bit ("I kind of prefer being the hole," my man did not say that, he can't even say that he's gay out loud yet) and obviously nothing where they have a Texas boy being a Russian is going to be perfect, but overall, I think it sticks the landing. Apparently the Texas boy loves linguistics and did do a good job learning Russian vowels. At one point he has like a five minute monologue in Russian, which is more than I personally could do in French which I speak like every day, so good for him.

The last episode really pulls out all the stops. Like, you've had this really compelling and (relatively) well paced love story paying out and they find the space to have some really compelling parent-child dynamics and exploration amidst the love story concluding. they do such a good job showing how this relationship has blossomed and what it can look like outside the confines of a hotel room, and how it's new but still comfortable. ALSO! It is beautifully lit! I love being able to see shit! I like that the ending isn't perfect--they aren't coming out, the best they can do is hopefully play for teams that are two hours apart, there's all the agonizing Explaining to the parents who don't know exactly what to say--and that it just ends with them driving down the road. Very apt visual metaphor. Based on what I've heard about subsequent books, I kind of hope JT goes rogue in season two, but we'll see.

I've read a little fic and I've got the kink meme open in a tab, but I'm not super duper compelled by it although I've read one or two good ones. I think a lot of it is probably just life stuff; my focus isn't great, I'm preoccupied by pregnancy stuff, it's liminal spacemas so I'm on screens too much anyway. Go support the kinkmeme because there's fuck all spaces where we can be like "this is a place to be horny however we want, manage your own feelings about it" these days.

Anyway, delighted to see such good CanCon on my screen during an otherwise gloomy media landscape, recommend everybody to watch it.

Hockey season. I do watch actual hockey as one of the only sports I don't find unforgivably boring but this month has also been hockey media.

Half my tumblr dashboard became obsessed with the new gay hockey show Heated Rivalry so I was like 'okay, I will try it' and yeah, it gave me feelings. I am, however, like the 1% of fandom that cares way more about Scott and Kip than Shane and Ilya. I've watched episodes 3 and 5 multiple times. After episode 3 I also decided I was going to read the Scott/Kip book so:

Game Changers by Rachel Reid. This reads like what I imagine hockey RPF fic to be like. Book Kip is annoying to me but I love show Kip. Overall I think the show hugely elevated the source material.

I will now begin my annual Christmas to New Year's vegetating phase :)

feeling a little bit more like myself today (woke up with the zoomies lmao) which is good. two long days of socializing have been a lot, but I’m on break for the next week. halfway through my steroid pack too, which is nice.

had to double check the day of the week, though. not entirely great! but anyway!

taking myself to barnes and noble for some books (mostly steel ball run on sale) before hunkering down for the remainder of the break. my goal is to finish a few more of the books on my kindle (finished a KU borrow this morning!) and hit some of my physical pile.

I’m not going to stress myself out by putting a goal on writing, so if it happens, it happens. I do have some ffxiv brainworms going on again too after clearing the raid tier and just feeling a bit more connected to it again so maybe I’ll organize my kikiyo lore here. I don’t think I’ve touched her lore doc in like, four years. hm.

anyway! anyway. book time. 💜

A holiday miracle

I hope everyone has had a nice christmas/holidays.

Xmas Eve my feed was flooded by the Heated Rivalry guys reading thirst tweets. I vaguely knew about it as a concept (a gay hockey show) so was kinda curious and I’m glad now tv are getting it next month so it’s an excuse to keep it once I’ve finished Welcome To Derry. But damn seeing those clips, I’m so enamoured by them. That doesn’t feel like the right word when one of them (Hudson) is saying the most unhinged things (which gets beeped a lot) while the other (Connor) is like ‘where’s the love, where’s the caressing’ and it’s just so funny. (Especially Hudson’s follow up) I need to watch the full thirst tweet vid but those clips alone made me need this show.

(Also it’s based on a book? Which is on kindle unlimited so I’ve got the to read)

After walking the pup we watched Muppet Christmas Carol which will always be a classic. I’m so sad they didn’t do more muppet adaptions of books (other than treasure island which I need to see again cause it’s so fun). But ahh the muppet show is coming back and so is rizzo the rat!

On the afternoon I watched Across The Spiderverse which I’d not seen before, despite getting the blu ray on sale last year. And damn, the animation for it is really so beautiful and the first they made every world a different art style too is so incredible. I’m excite for the next one especially as it’s a more direct follow up.

In the night time I managed to finally finish ficcing something, woo! Hopefully this means I can get back to writing (either tackling the WIPs of doom or the ideas in my head but I do wanna do gift fic then I have concepts)

It did mean I didn’t have the full focus for the ghost story for Christmas which is a bit of a shame so I might have to rewatch, but it was nice (and unexpected) to see Nancy Carroll (Lady Felicia from Father Brown) in it.

Xmas day was spent not doing too much. Gift wise I got the two Lego gift sets, a cute gingerbread train and a badnik crabmeat from sonic, along with Hellfire headphones (and the charm) and two hardcover books from mums friend (Murder On The Orient Express and Evil Under The Sun which, like Halloween Party are shiny). The big thing was the record player so that’s all set up now. I’ve only listened to two things (one side of James Marriott’s Bitter Tongues, to test it, and one side of the first disc of Sleep Token’s Even In Arcadia) but it does sound really nice.

However I have been hit by the neurodivergent need to know. Like how does a vinyl work? I know it’s to do with groves but how does that even work? How’s the sound get put on there like that? How does it translate? I’m gonna have to find if there’s a video or documentary about it.

The rest of the day was spent watching stuff, like the excellent Vengeance Most Fowl which is just an incredible film (Feathers McGraw is a generational villain) and then White Christmas before sticking it on bbc1 and tuning out a bit. Alas mum was sick from something (we think the wine cause it was the only thing she had that I didn’t, bar the chicken which the girls had and they were fine) so that sucked for her. Thankfully she seems better now which is good.

Also as an annoyance, my Xbox has decided it wants to throw a fit. Last night it didn’t recognise the expansion card (that has been plugged in since it came and was working fine yesterday) which would be enough to annoy me on its own but I’ve gone through fix attempts before bed and now it won’t even come on properly, ugh. (Edit: at least thay part is sorted)

I had considered watching Stranger Things but I knew Iw as too wiped so now the plan is tomorrow (unless I’m not tired tonight) so we’ll see. I’m also debating seeing Anaconda either tomorrow or next week but again, we’ll see.

Today is gonna be watching the new Puss In Boots, then the festive repair shop, pottery throw down and quiz of the year. And hopefully ficcing a bit or something too.
