A 'friending meme' is a holdover from livejournal days where the term for following other people's journals was 'friending' them. DW considers this a 'circle' and tumblr simply calls it 'following'. Whatever the term, the premise is the same - it's an activity where you can find others with similar interests follow on DW/tumblr/wherever.
