Welcome to our last of four check-in and discussion posts for our Book of the Month.
This month’s book is The Rising Storm (The High Republic) by Cavan Scott
Chapters Chapters 58-76
The Rising Storm
1. How satisfied are you with the ending?
2. Other thoughts?
FYI - There's no need to answer all (or any) of the questions above - they're just talking points to get us started. Informal chatter is more than welcome! In-person book clubs often veer off-topic, it's okay if we do as well. :)

Date: 2023-01-30 10:41 pm (UTC)I liked that Senator Troon wasn't sabotaging the Republic, and that the Jedi and Republic forces were able to ambush the Nihil, even if that was aided partly by Lourna's betrayal of Eyta. It was nice to feel as if they and the Republic are actually making progress - I've noticed in recent years that I don't have a lot of patience for plotlines in shows like 24 or some of the Walking Dead seasons, where for episode after episode the bad guys demonstrate that they've predicted the plans being used against them and have already put a response in place. I actually rather enjoyed the Nihil starting to fracture and betray each other - although this novel and the previous one left me wondering just how many ships the Nihil have, and where they managed to get them all. For a pirate group, they seem to be a very significant naval power.
The voice actor for Stellan really sounds like the voice actor for Obi-wan, which threw me a few times!
I picked up a mention of a reference to the old messenger droids used by the Republic "a century ago". That made it sound as if doids - or at least, complex droids - were a relatively new invention, which surprised me a bit.

Date: 2023-01-31 01:04 am (UTC)I don't think complex droids are a new invention at this stage. I think a messenger droid is just a type of droid. Like how there are Imperial probe droids during Empire Strikes Back that are relatively non-complex. During the crisis on Hetzel, one of the 'geeks' used a bunch of navidroids to *handwaves* avert something? Predict something? I can't recall.
There's a droid that shows up in The Clone Wars that has been around for a thousand generations. Professor Huyang (side note: he is voiced by David Tennet)
