I struggled with the large cast and the inconsistent character voices among various authors (or possibly that I never connected enough with any of these characters in the first place?).

The pacing of this was difficult for me and, again, lacking in the connection I sense we're supposed to be feeling for these characters as disaster strikes.

I'm disappointed because I usually love this author's Star Wars books and just wasn't feeling this one.

This is the second time I've read this book, and I found that I wasn't really any more attached to the characters the second time around than I was the first time. I'd read a number of the comics set in the immediate aftermath of this before I read the novel the first time, so I spent a fair amount of time the first time around feeling like it was taking a long time for the novel to get to the reveals around what was happening, and I felt much the same way this time. There were a small number of characters I remembered pretty well from other books, but jumping around as I try and catch up with earlier books via a past Humble Bundle has left my sense of continuity pretty well scrambled, and none of the characters are standing out as being particularly memorable to me with the exceptions of Nan and Yarrow.

I think the pacing perhaps felt odd to me because having announced what was going to happen, it then seemed to take a long time for things to then actually happen... or I may just be getting impatient?

Yes! It took SO LONG to get to the point. I gather the intent was to show how important Starlight Beacon (and it's destruction) was to the Jedi and the entire Outer Rim by showing all these people coming from all over, but wow... that wasn't a good way to do it.

Seems like you and I had similar experiences with feeling disconnected from this one. That leads me to believe it isn't due to the other material you've been reading because I've only read the adult and YA books in order and still felt that way.

I'm listening to another High Republic-era audiobook for the December read, and again I'm struggling to keep track of the characters and their significance. I'm really starting to wonder if I'm just not capable of forming coherent memories of characters that I haven't seen in movies or tv shows, although I don't remember struggling this much with the first two of the novels featuring the Nihil.
