This is a themed month. The idea is to read any Star Wars book you'd like that can be applied to the theme. The material can be anything - adult, YA, comics, even story-centric games.

1. What did you read this month?

2. Describe a memorable scene or character that seemed to encapsulate the book for you.

3. How did you like it?

So, confession time... I'm still only halfway through Death Troopers. I've found the only way I can read my paperback copy is with both my reading glasses and a magnifying glass, and I've not had a day out where I could spend a couple of hours sitting somewhere like Tim Hortons to just read without distractions. I'm contemplating seeing if it's on Audible or Kindle in my region so I can try and read it that way to finish the story over the holidays...

I bought a copy of this in Kindle the night before last because it was bugging me how long it was taking me to read, and finished it yesterday evening. Death Troopers is in some way a vehicle for the "what if?" question of "what if there were zombies in the Star Wars universe?"

It's effectively a haunted house story, only the house is a conjoined Imperial prison barge and Star Destroyer, and in a lot of ways I think it worked well. One of the things that the Star Destroyer helps with when setting a mood is just how unsettling it is if something that big is apparently empty and abandoned. It's like walking into an abandoned city with no explanation for where everyone went.

The decision not to introduce any of the known characters from the Star Wars universe until halfway through the book was an interesting one, and we spend a lot of time seeing them through the eyes of the new characters introduced in this novel. I was waiting to see who might appear, and without wanting to give away spoilers, I like that they weren't by default immune to what was happening. The horror aspect of this worked pretty well for me because the new characters were the ones whose emotions came across most clearly.

I think this was a good read, although the ending makes me wonder what comes next; I would've liked an epilogue that explained how the threat was permanently dealt with, or to highlight that it's still floating around out there, waiting for the unwary...
